ZURICH, Switzerland - Switzerland edged a thrilling battle of undefeated Group A teams, defeating Czechia in a shoot-out on Tuesday. Kevin Fiala, making his first appearance of the championship, scored the decisive goal in the shootout after a 3-3 tie in regulation.
Fiala, who arrived in Switzerland from Los Angeles just a day earlier, made an immediate impact on his return to the national team. The Los Angeles Kings forward put Switzerland ahead in the first period, only for Czechia to fight back with two goals in the second period.
Nico Hischier and Philipp Kurashev scored for Switzerland in the third period to force overtime, but neither team could find a winner in the extra frame. In the shootout, Fiala calmly slotted the puck past Czech goaltender Karel Vejmelka to secure the victory.
The win was Switzerland's second in the tournament, maintaining their perfect record atop Group A. Czechia, who were also undefeated heading into the clash, now sits second in the group with one loss.
